Thursday, August 7, 2025 - President William Ruto has strongly defended the boda boda sector just days after his senior advisor, Prof. Makau Mutua, called for a total ban of the industry in all major cities and towns across Kenya.
Addressing the Boda Boda Association at State House,
Nairobi, on Thursday, August 7th, Ruto reaffirmed his unwavering
support for the sector, promising that no one - regardless of their position - would
be allowed to destabilize or threaten its existence.
"If there is a leader who has done Harambees and stood
with the boda boda business, it is me. No other leader has supported you
like I have,"
Ruto said. “During the elections, two groups were central to
the conversation: Mama mboga and boda boda.”
“No one can threaten those businesses.”
The President’s remarks came just days after Mutua penned an
opinion piece and made viral comments on social media, urging for a blanket ban
on boda boda operations in urban areas.
In a widely shared tweet following a violent incident in
Nairobi’s Donholm area - where boda boda riders allegedly set a bus ablaze - Mutua
stated:
“We must ban boda boda pronto!” He described the
industry as a lawless entity posing an “existential threat” to public safety.
