Monday, June 23, 2025 - The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security advisory urging American citizens in Kenya to exercise heightened caution ahead of nationwide protests scheduled for Wednesday, June 25th.
In the advisory dated June 20th, the Embassy
cited concerns over potential violence during the demonstrations, which are
expected to commemorate the anniversary of the June 2024 protests where over 61
Kenyans were killed, including several youths.
The Embassy warned Americans to avoid the Nairobi Central
Business District (CBD) and other protest hotspots across all 47 counties.
“Demonstrations are expected countrywide starting at 10:00
am on June 25th, with vigils and gatherings in Nairobi on June 24th
and 25th,” the statement read in part.
Americans were urged to take precautions such as locking car
doors, rolling up windows, informing family and friends of their whereabouts,
and reviewing personal security plans.
Citizens were also advised to carry copies of their U.S
passports and current Kenyan visas at all times.
The advisory encouraged close monitoring of local media for
updates before venturing out.
Meanwhile, the National Police Service cautioned businesses
owners against hiring private security to protect their businesses during the
protests.
“There is no legal provision allowing citizens to hire
individuals to guard their businesses,” NPS spokesperson, Michael Muchiri,
asserted.
"Any youth being asked to show up in the protests and
protect businesses should know that they are breaching the law to the highest
degree," he added.
