Friday, June 27, 2025 - President William Ruto has made significant changes in the leadership of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), following recommendations by the Defence Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Roselinda Soipan Tuya.
The Ministry of Defence announced the changes on Friday,
stating that they are part of efforts to enhance the leadership structure
across all service branches of the military.
Among the key appointments, Major General David Kipkemboi
Ketter has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and named the new
Commander of the Kenya Army.
He replaces Lieutenant General David Kimaiyo Chemwaina
Tarus, who has been redeployed to the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K)
as Vice Chancellor.
Prior to the appointment, Ketter served as Assistant Chief
of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics.
In the Kenya Air Force, Major General Benard Waliaula has
been appointed Commander, replacing Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed, who exits
the military after an illustrious 42-year career.
Waliaula previously served as Director of Defence National
Security Industries.
Brigadier Joel Muriungi M’arimi has been promoted to Major
General and appointed Commandant of the Kenya Military Academy.
Additionally, Brigadier Joyce Chelang’at Sitienei has been
elevated to Major General and named Deputy Vice Chancellor, Centre for
Strategic and Security Studies at NDU-K.
She previously served as Director of the International Peace
Support Centre.
The changes reflect a strategic reshuffle aimed at
reinforcing professionalism and leadership within the KDF.
