Wednesday, May 21, 2025 - Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, narrowly escaped death during the 2023 anti-Government protests over the high cost of living, ODM’s Director of Communications, Philip Etale, has claimed.
In a post on X (formerly twitter), Etale described a harrowing
moment when Kalonzo’s life, and those of several opposition figures, was nearly
cut short following what he termed “orders” allegedly issued by then-Deputy
President Rigathi Gachagua.
Etale narrated that during a major demonstration along
Pangani, Juja Road, and Riverside, thousands of protestors joined opposition
leaders demanding economic reforms.
While the atmosphere was tense but peaceful, chaos erupted
near Moi Airbase.
“Our convoy of over 500 vehicles was met with lorryloads of
anti-riot police.”
“Suddenly, water cannons emerged from Mathare and Huruma
estates,” Etale narrated.
He alleged that police targeted Kalonzo’s vehicle, firing
tear gas canisters directly into it, shattering windows and engulfing the cabin
in toxic smoke.
Kalonzo reportedly lost consciousness and had to be rescued
by security aides and protestors.
“You passed out due to gas inside the car. We thought we’d
suffocate. I haven’t forgotten,” Etale recalled.
He used the incident to question Kalonzo’s current political
alignment with Gachagua, the man he accuses of orchestrating the attack.
The former DP, now in the opposition after falling out with
President Ruto, has hinted at a working relationship with Kalonzo ahead of the
2027 polls, an alliance Etale sees as ironic, given their deadly encounter
during the protests.
