Wednesday, May 21, 2025 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that Father John Maina Ndegwa, the slain priest of Igwamiti Parish in Nyandarua County, had criticised the Government in a bold sermon just weeks before his tragic death.
In a statement on Wednesday, May 21st, Gachagua
mourned the priest, describing him as a close friend and trusted counsellor who
often spoke candidly about national issues.
“He was my personal friend and counsellor for a long time. I
met him several times, and we discussed many matters of national interest,” he
said.
Gachagua noted that during a church event on April 27th,
attended by top politicians, the priest delivered a powerful sermon touching on
the state of the nation.
“Two weeks before he met his death, Fr. John had hosted me
for his silver jubilee celebrations, where he gave a powerful sermon and spoke
out his mind on the State of the Nation.” He added.
He called for swift justice, urging authorities to arrest
and prosecute those responsible.
Father Maina was found with head injuries near the Diatomite
stage along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway on May 15th.
A boda boda rider who discovered him claimed the priest said
he had been abducted from Nyahururu.
He was rushed to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil,
where he died shortly after admission.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) suspects
the killing may be linked to individuals who trailed the priest, allegedly
demanding a share of donations he received during the April church event.
An autopsy revealed head bruises, though they were not
deemed the cause of death.
Toxicology tests are ongoing.
The DCI has urged the public to refrain from speculation, affirming that investigations are ongoing and justice will be served.
