Friday, January 26, 2024 - Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has blasted Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga and his Muranga counterpart, Joe Nyutu, over engaging in premature 2027 political debates.
Speaking in Meru County yesterday, Gachagua asked the two
senators to focus on their oversight roles and keep off things that do not
concern them.
"Those of us who have been specifically elected under
UDA and Kenya Kwanza, we should focus on development, and articulate our
statements because some, when they go on TV, get excited, lose focus, and
engage in unnecessary matters.
"We want senators to be careful because we have also
seen another senator from Murang'a also speaking rubbish,” Gachagua stated.
The DP asked Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi to summon Nyutu
and Wamatinga and advise them to keep off early political debates.
“Kathuri Murungi, you are the deputy speaker call those
senators from Murang'a and Nyeri, sit them down, and tell them they are out of
order,” Gachagua told Murungi.
Last week, Senator Nyutu said Gachagua is losing
popularity in the Mt Kenya region and should be dropped as President Ruto’s
running mate in the 2027 general election in favor of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
“I would not want to see the president coming in with a
running mate who is not popular.
"I think there will be challenges with Gachagua hence
Nyoro will be preferred as we are on the ground listening to people,” said
Nyutu.
On the other hand, Wamatinga has been calling for the
formation of a Mt Kenya political party ahead of the 2027 election, saying the
region lacks a voice to bargain in the current administration.
