Tuesday, August 25, 2026- The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Court Clerk attached to the Busia Law Courts for demanding and receiving a Ksh180,000 bribe to influence the outcome of a criminal case pending before the court.
The
suspect, Wesley Kipkoech Langat, is alleged to have acted on behalf of a
Magistrate at the station by demanding the bribe from an accused person as an
inducement to secure a lenient penalty in the case.
According
to the EACC, investigations commenced after a report was made that the
Magistrate, through the Court Clerk, had demanded the money to secure a
favourable outcome for the complainant and six co-accused persons in a case
involving a commercial vehicle that had been impounded by police over alleged
traffic offences.
The Commission mounted an operation that led to Langat’s arrest after he allegedly received the Ksh180,000.
He
is currently being held at the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for
processing and is expected to be booked at Bungoma Police Station as
investigations continue.
The
arrest forms part of the Commission’s sustained crackdown on bribery and other
forms of corruption, particularly at public service delivery points and within
the justice system.
EACC
has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding integrity and accountability in
the delivery of public services and administration of justice.
The Commission further urged members of the public to report cases of bribery and other corrupt practices as it steps up efforts to enhance the quality and integrity of public services.
