DIG MASENGELI explains why police set up roadblocks on major roads in Nairobi during Gen Z protests anniversary

Thursday, June 25, 2026 - Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, has defended the heavy police presence and roadblocks erected across key roads leading into Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) during the Gen Z protest anniversary.

Speaking on Thursday, June 25th, Masengeli said the barricades were designed to screen vehicles for weapons and prevent criminal elements from infiltrating peaceful demonstrations.

“What is happening is to ensure that those taking part in the demonstrations are properly protected and that individuals with ill intentions do not infiltrate them.”

“If you see a vehicle being stopped and searched, the police are trying to determine whether it is carrying weapons, dangerous items or people who may pose a security threat,” he explained.

“We are not blocking people; we are allowing them,” he added.

On Thursday morning, officers mounted roadblocks along Thika Super Highway, Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, Langata Road, Ngong Road and Magadi Road.

Additional barricades were placed at the Bunyala Roundabout and Jogoo Road near City Stadium, restricting vehicle entry into the CBD.

Parliament buildings were also sealed off with barbed wire, with heavy deployment of officers ahead of the anniversary protests.

Families of victims of the June 25th, 2024 demonstrations marched to Parliament and  to laid wreaths in their honour.

They were joined by Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, PLP leader Martha Karua and former Chief Justice David Maraga.
