Tuesday, August 19, 2025 - Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has come out in defence of Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, ahead of his anticipated return from the US.
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with opposition leaders
ahead of Gachagua’s return from the United States, Matiang’i said the former
Deputy President was facing political persecution for speaking the truth.
He claimed Gachagua’s allegations were consistent with
findings published in two international reports.
“What is happening here is looting, not corruption.”
“Massive looting of the country is happening, and we are
just watching.”
“When people like Rigathi talk about it, they start getting
arrest threats,” Matiang’i said.
He specifically cited reports alleging Kenya’s involvement
in facilitating the sale of arms to neighbouring Sudan, questioning the Government’s
silence on the issue.
“Now they are threatening to arrest Gachagua.”
“Things become criminal only when Rigathi says them. They
should stop thinking Kenyans are fools,” he added.
Matiang’i urged citizens to resist what he termed as a
“looting regime,” warning that ‘looting’ is far more dangerous than corruption.
“Some countries can survive corruption, but I don’t know any
that can survive looting,” he said.
Gachagua, while in the U.S last week, accused the Government
of embezzling funds and controversially claimed President William Ruto had met
three Al Shabaab militants in Mandera - remarks that prompted threats of
arrest.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has since directed him to
record a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The DCP leader, however, dismissed the summons and announced
he will cut short his trip.
He is expected back in the country on Thursday, August 21st,
ahead of the November 27th by-elections.
