Monday, August 4, 2025 - People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has sharply criticized President William Ruto following his recent meeting with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi.
Speaking in a media interview on Monday, August 4th,
Karua questioned the motive behind the rare public encounter, accusing Ruto of
using Uhuru to revive his fading political clout.
“I saw William Ruto holding on to him to make it look like
he is on his side. Just the other day, he was insulting him - now he wants to
get closer because he knows he is losing it,” said Karua.
She maintained that the opposition had not met with Uhuru
for political purposes and urged leaders to respect his retirement from active
politics.
“As opposition leaders, we have not held any political
meeting with Uhuru Kenyatta.”
“We may speak privately to wish him well, but we respect his
position and believe he should not be dragged into daily partisan politics,”
she added.
The meeting, held on Friday, August 1st, was part
of a joint session of the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African
Development Community (SADC) co-chairs.
“It marked the first time Uhuru and Ruto appeared publicly
together since December 2024.”
Uhuru toured the newly renovated State House and attended
the summit alongside AU Commission Chair Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Zimbabwean
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Ruto.
The session focused on regional peace efforts.
