Why former President UHURU KENYATTA has been honoured by the World Health Organisation (WHO)

Tuesday, July 15, 2025 - Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has once again earned international acclaim - this time from the World Health Organisation (WHO) - for his influential role in advocating for the groundbreaking WHO Pandemic Agreement.

The agreement, adopted during the 78th World Health Assembly in May 2025, is a global pledge by nations to work collaboratively in preventing, preparing for, and responding to future pandemics.

At a special event held on July 10th, 2025, at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Uhuru received a certificate of recognition personally signed by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The event brought together global leaders whose support was instrumental in steering the agreement forward.

"His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta… in recognition of your key role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement," read the citation.

Kenya was among 25 countries whose current or former leaders were honoured - including France, Indonesia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Rwanda.

Dr. Ghebreyesus hailed the agreement as a turning point in global health cooperation, saying it embodies equity, shared responsibility, and resilience.

For Uhuru, this honour adds to a growing list of recognitions.

In 2023, he was awarded for mediating peace in Northern Ethiopia, and in 2022, for promoting stability across the Great Lakes region.
