DIG LAGAT bows to pressure and ‘steps aside’ amid probe over ALBERT OJWANG’s death in police custody

Monday, June 16, 2025 - Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Kipkoech Lagat has officially stepped aside from his role as pressure mounts over the death of blogger Albert Ojwang’ in police custody.

In a statement released Monday, Lagat said he had taken the decision "in good and conscious thought," citing the public interest and the gravity of his office.

His exit follows weeks of growing outrage and calls for accountability after Ojwang’s controversial arrest and death.

Ojwang’ was arrested and taken into custody after Lagat filed a defamation complaint against him.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja told the Senate last week that the arrest followed online posts accusing Lagat of corruption and linking him to the purchase of a $2.6 million Dubai property.

Meanwhile, Central Police Station OCS Samson Taalam and Constable James Mukhwana have been arrested in connection with the case.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also detained three civilian suspects - Gin Ammitou Abwao, Collins Karani Ireri and Brian Mwaniki Njue - alleged to have been used by police to assault Ojwang’.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had earlier stated that IPOA was still investigating and no conclusive evidence had yet emerged to justify Lagat’s resignation, but acknowledged the public pressure.

“DIG Lagat is a seasoned officer who understands the requirements of investigations.
Whether his position impacts the ongoing probe is for IPOA to determine.”

“If the situation changes, we will cross that bridge when we get there,” said Murkomen.

Lagat's decision marks a turning point in what has become one of Kenya’s most high-profile police abuse cases in recent years.
