Friday,
May 9, 2025 - Raila Odinga has openly
disagreed with Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o over the Government’s plan to
lease State-owned sugar mills to private investors.
The former Prime Minister
expressed his support for the leasing plan during a meeting with Agriculture
Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday.
According to ODM Communications
Director Philip Etale, the two leaders discussed comprehensive reforms in
agriculture, including the leasing of Nzoia, Chemelil, Muhoroni, and Sony Sugar
companies, with Raila backing the initiative as key to rural development and
food security.
This comes after Nyong’o termed
the proposal as “daylight robbery” and an “economic coup.”
In a strongly worded statement,
Governor Nyong’o said the plan had been “fast-tracked and finalised under a
cloak of secrecy,” warning that over 60,000 farmers and vital public
institutions were being sidelined.
“This is nothing short of
daylight robbery, an economic coup against over 60,000 farmers involving 15,000
hectares of farmland, essential public offices, churches, mosques, homes, and
renowned learning institutions,” he said.
The Nzoia Sugar Company has
already been leased to businessman Jaswant Rai for 30 years, a move rejected by
workers and farmers who say they were not consulted and are owed over 28 months
in salary arrears.
The deepening row highlights
widening rifts within ODM over policy direction.
