Wednesday, May 21, 2025 - Senate Speaker Amason
Kingi has declared Gloria Orwoba's Senate seat vacant, officially confirming
her ouster and paving the way for her replacement under the United Democratic
Alliance (UDA) party.
In a gazette notice dated Wednesday, May 21st,
Kingi stated that Orwoba's seat, held under Article 98(1)(b) of the
Constitution, had become vacant effective immediately.
The move came just two days after UDA’s disciplinary
committee expelled Orwoba from the party - a decision ratified by the party’s
National Executive Committee.
“Pursuant to Article 101(2) of the Constitution, the seat
held by Senator Gloria Orwoba has become vacant with effect from May 21, 2025,”
the notice read.
UDA has since nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi to
replace Orwoba as the nominated Senator representing youth interests.
Her name has been forwarded to the Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for processing.
Orwoba’s removal follows weeks of political friction with
the ruling party.
She had earlier defied a Senate directive to apologise upon
returning from suspension, but it was her decision to attend events hosted by
former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i -now aligned with UDA critics - that
ultimately sealed her fate.
Her presence at Matiang’i’s welcome event at Gusii Stadium
on May 2nd and her criticism of the Government’s labour export
programme during a recent interview were cited during the party’s disciplinary
proceedings.
