Monday, May 5, 2025 - Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has thrown his weight behind Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the opposition’s best bets for the 2027 presidential race.
Speaking during an interview with NTV Kenya on Monday, May 5th, Onyonka said the
opposition is determined to unite behind one candidate to challenge President
William Ruto.
He identified Kalonzo and Matiang’i as the front-runners,
citing their leadership credentials and national appeal.
“If Kalonzo becomes president, I will sleep well. The
front-runners are either Kalonzo and Matiang’i or Matiang’i and Kalonzo. That
is where we are,” he remarked.
Onyonka praised Kalonzo’s extensive experience, having
served under former Presidents Moi, Kibaki, and Uhuru, as well as with ODM
leader, Raila Odinga, during his time as Prime Minister.
While acknowledging Raila’s immense contributions to the
country’s political journey, he urged the veteran leader to pave the way for
fresh leadership.
The vocal senator also defended his decision to support
Matiang’i, criticizing Raila’s decision to form a broad-based Government with
President Ruto.
Meanwhile, speaking at former Deputy President Rigathi
Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home on Sunday, May 4th, Matiang’i called for
unity among opposition leaders and stressed the need to restore public trust.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary stated that current the
challenges Kenyans are facing are surmountable.
