Common bets in Roulette

Since its inception in the 18th century in France, roulette has dominated the gambling arena, taking centre stage in casinos across the globe.

When the game made its way across the pond to America following its explosion in popularity across European countries, the design of the roulette wheel was tweaked to include an additional green slot, taking the original of 37 slots to 38 by including a double 0, which would mean all bets were lost if players bet on any other number. The European wheel is still the most popular and is most commonly played, especially outside of the US as players have higher odds of winning with the European roulette wheel.

Roulette is a beautifully simple game, meaning lots of people can confidently play the game once they understand how to bet. Before you dive into the game, let’s go through the common bets in roulette so you know where to start so you can make the most out of the exciting experience! There are over 20 types of bets in total, but the most common bets that are most popular with players are as follows:

Outside Bets

Outside bets are waged on the perimeter of the table based on groups of colours or numbers. The common bets are red or black, which has odds of 1-1; odd or even bet which is also a 1-1 bet as there is a 50/50 chance of winning; high or low which is again an even money bet where you bet on either low numbers 1-18 or high numbers 19-36. Slightly less common, you can also bet on different columns. There are three columns to bet on, the first covers the ball dropping into slots 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, or 34, the second covers 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35 and finally the last column comprises slots 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, and 36. Each of the three columns pays 2-1, or double your bet in other words! Similarly, you can bet dozens which are a bet on one of three groups of numbers, each containing 12 numbers but in consecutive order: 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36. Once again this pays 2-1.

Inside Bets

Inside bets comprise all bets made from the inside of the rectangle on the roulette table and these are the most common inside bets in Roulette:

Straight Up

Want to keep things simple? This is this simplest of inside bets, you simply pick any single number to bet on and this kind of bet pays 35-1.

Split

Unlike a straight bet, a split bet your bet is on two numbers next to each other and if the ball drops into the slot of their of those numbers you will win. This has a payout of 17-1 so is quite a popular bet.

Street

A street bet is where you place your bets on any three numbers in a row, for example, 1,2,3 or 30,31,32. This kind of bet pays at a rate of 11:1.

Corner

Similar to the split bet, a corner bet is where you bet on four numbers that form a square shape, for example, 1,2,4,5 or 29,30,32,33. This kind of bet pays 8-1.
