Thursday September 12, 2019 - A report by a United States scholar, Prof Paul Williams, has revealed the number of AMISOM soldiers including Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers, who have been killed since the day Kenya declared war against Al Shabaab.
KDF declared war on Al Shabaab on October 16th, 2011 after the insurgents kidnapped an American tourist along the Kenya-Somali border.
KDF soldiers first went to southern Somalia but were later formally integrated into AMISOM on February 22nd, 2012.
This was after the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 2036.
Paul Williams, in his report, said over 1,800 AMISON troops have been butchered by Al Shabaab since 2012.
He based his report on African Union’s financial compensation records on sums paid to families who lost loved ones in the years since AMISON's deployment in 2012.
“A plausible estimate of Amisom's fatalities between March 2007 and December 2018 could be between 1,483 and 1, 884,” writes Prof Williams, who is International Affairs scholar at George Washington University.
According to the scholar, AMISOM does not give official records of troops who have been killed, only erecting an epitaph to celebrate their services in Mogadishu.
Paul challenged AMISOM to consider making the names public despite the danger that such a move pauses especially from Al Shabaab so that they are openly celebrated.
