US Embassy in Nairobi to stop accepting old Sh1,000 notes from this date as exchange deadline nears!

Friday, September 6, 2019 - The United States Embassy in Nairobi has advised those applying for visas at their consulate that they will no longer be accepting the old generation Sh1, 000 banknotes from September 12th, 2019.

Those still holding the Sh1,000 notes have until September 30th to exchange them with the new generation notes after which they will cease to be legal tender.

The US Embassy had announced that they would not be accepting the new generation banknotes in June, just days after the new noted were unveiled by CBK Governor, Dr. Patrick Njoroge.

The Embassy had stated that they were still developing security procedures to accept the new banknotes.

Banks have so far collected more than 100 million pieces out of 217 million pieces that were in circulation when the demonetisation was announced in June 1st according to CBK Governor, Dr Patrick Njoroge.
