Tuesday September 17, 2019 - President
Uhuru Kenyatta has today challenged the newly appointed National Youth Service
(NYS) Director General, Matilda Sakwa, to take the agency to another new level.
Speaking at State House, Nairobi, where he witnessed
the swearing of Sakwa as the NYS boss, the Head of State ordered her to
transform the agency into a training institution that effectively delivers on
its mandate
“You are a person with experience in the management
of public resources and also in public service and administration.”
“I have confidence that you will deliver not only to the Government
but also to the people of Kenya.”
“You have the capacity to take this organization to the next
level,” Uhuru said.
The father of the nation further asked Matilda to ensure that the agency
reclaims its position in national development by equipping the youth with
adequate skills and expertise to enable them to contribute to nation-building.
He also observed that NYS has in the past failed to deliver on its mandate
due to challenges of integrity and weak leadership and tasked Sakwa to rebuild
the trust, confidence and faith of Kenyans in the institution.
“I have never failed to believe in this organization as an instrument of
transformation of our republic and of our young people," he said.
NYS has in the last 10 years been an avenue of mega corruption where
billions of taxpayers’ money is looted by senior Government officials.
Uhuru asked Matilda to ensure the agency is corruption free and all
tenders raised in accordance with the laid down procurement laws.
