Wednesday, September 18, 2019 - Award winning Kenyan Teacher, Mwalimu Peter Tabichi, on Tuesday had a rare opportunity to open the US congress with a prayer.
The selfless teacher, who won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize that came with a Sh100 million ($1 million) reward, is in New York where he’s set to address the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Having met President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, the 36-year old teacher who donates 80% of his salary, was accorded a rare opportunity to say a prayer in the US Congress.
He becomes the first Kenyan to recite the Franciscan prayer for peace at the Capitol, Washington DC.
“It was a great privilege and honor to open the US Congress with the Franciscan prayer for peace at the Capitol. What a great day! God bless us all,” he tweeted.
The Peace Prayer of Saint Francis asks God to make the people instruments of peace.
“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy,” reads part of the of St Francis of Assisi prayer.
