Thursday, September 5, 2019 - The Kenyan medical fraternity has lost a budding obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Edward Were, through a tragic road accident as he was hurrying to perform a life-saving Cesarean Delivery for a patient who was already in theatre.

Dr.Were died after the car he was traveling in rammed into an oncoming vehicle along the Eastern By-Pass on Wednesday night.

According to Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KPMDU) Secretary-General for Nairobi branch, Dr. Thuranira Kaugiria, Dr. Were died on the spot.

“When the hospital called him (Dr. Were) to inquire why he was running late for the surgery, it is a police officer who received the call and told the caller that Dr Were had been involved in a grisly car crash on the Eastern Bypass,” Dr. Thuranira said.

Another doctor was dispatched and the mother had a successful delivery via C-section and her baby is also fine.

Taking to twitter, KMPDU paid a glowing tribute to the late doctor describing him as ‘a very diligent and reliable doctor who always strived to be available irrespective of when he was called for duty’

Dr. Were was attached to Nairobi Women’ Hospital, Ongata Rongai branch.
