Thursday September 12, 2019 – The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), George Kinoti, has summoned former Harambee Stars midfielder, MacDonald Mariga, to Mazingira House, to shed more light about his age.

In papers he presented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday, Mariga, who is the Jubilee Candidate in Kibra by-election, claimed that he was born in 1987 and he was issued with a National Identity card in 2011.

In an interview with journalists on Thursday, Kinoti said that he has formed a special team of investigators to investigate Mariga, who has the backing of Deputy President William Ruto.

DCI is also investigating circumstances under which he applied to be a voter.

Mariga claimed he registered as a voter in Kariokor two weeks after the Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, declared the Kibra seat vacant.

But the former Inter Milan midfielder has appealed IEBC's decision, arguing that his rights are being infringed despite being a registered voter.

“I have filed the complaint to challenge the decision of the Returning Officer Beatrice Muli for invalidating my nomination as a candidate for the Jubilee Party.”

“The decision violates my rights and fundamental freedom protected by the Constitution and the Election Act.”

“I verily believe to be true that the law allows for continuous registrations as voter under the Election Act Section 5(1) and the voter registers are being updated continuously as per the respected laws,” Mariga said in an affidavit signed by his lawyers.
