Thursday September 5, 2019-Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has claimed seven counties have failed to remit taxes worth Sh 13 billion despite being issued with a demand letter a year ago.

According to a statement issued by KRA on Wednesday, the seven governors risk arrest if they will not give valid reasons for the same.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is expected to present himself today to the taxman’s headquarters to defend himself for allegedly failing to remit tax amounting to Sh4.5 billion in taxes. 

The KRA management revealed that Sonko and six other governors are on spot over tax evasion.

The other governors who are set to be grilled are Okoth Obado (Migori), Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay), Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Mwangi Wa Iria(Murang’a) and Ferdinard Waititu  of Kiambu.

According to KRA, Waititu owes Sh3,216,613,189, Nanok’s (Sh455,634,523), Kingi Sh2,059,410,078 while Obado’s is yet to settle  Sh1,300,000,000 tax demand. 

The report from the taxman also shows that wa Iria owes Sh1, 021,174,037 and Awiti(Sh765,718,819).
