Saturday, September 28, 2019- The move by betting firms SportPesa and Betin to halt their operations in Kenya has drawn out mixed reactions.

SportPesa, which was the largest betting firm in Kenya, announced on Saturday it was shutting its operations in Kenya citing hostile environment and punitive taxes from the government.

The announcement comes a day after Betin, which was the second largest betting firm in Kenya announced it was declaring all their staff redundant after government declined to renew their license.

The two firms were among 27 betting companies which were barred from conducting business in Kenya whose licenses were revoked by the government over a taxation row.
A section of Kenyans led by former Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo, have welcomed the move.
