Monday September 9, 2019 - Criminal lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, has accused detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) of torturing suspects in the Sh72 million ATM heist that took place last Thursday.
In the robbery dubbed ‘money heist’ by Kenyans, 3 criminals posing as police officers stole money from Standard Chartered Bank, Nairobi West Branch, and escaped.
Six suspects were arrested and according to their lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, they are being tortured by DCI detectives as they try to extract information from them.
On Monday, Ombeta told Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku that the suspects in police custody were beaten and tortured by the detectives.
He added that one of them was forced to make an admission that he was a police officer even though he wasn't.
Ombeta also said that Duncan Kaveshi, the suspect in question, was injured in the head and wrist after being tied with ropes and threatened by the police that they will unleash dogs on him.
The police are seeking to have the suspects detained for seven more days as they continue with the investigations.
The suspects in police custody so far are Chris Machogi, Duncan Kaveshi Luvunga, Boniface Mutua, Vincent Owuor, Alex Mutuku, and Francis Muriuki.
