Tuesday September 10,2019 - Jubilee Party candidate in the Kibra by-election, MacDonald Mariga, has suffered a major setback after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) refused to clear him to contest the by-election slated for November 7th.

Making the announcement on Tuesday evening, an IEBC official identified as Beatrice said that Mariga is not a registered voter in Kenya as per the commission’s records.

"I cannot find Mr. Mariga’s name in our register,"
"It is a legal requirement for any aspirants in Kenya to be registered as voters,” Beatrice told journalists.

Mariga, who has the backing of Deputy President William Ruto, had earlier in the day been awarded his nomination certificate by the ruling Jubilee Party to contest the seat at an event officiated by the party Secretary General, Raphael Tuju.

Efforts by former Senator, Boni Khalwale, and Lang’ata MP, Nixon Korir, to present an acknowledgement slip to IEBC fell on deaf ears.

Mariga and Jubilee Party now have until Sunday to prove to the IEBC that he is a registered voter in Kenya or be disqualified completely.
