Thursday August 22, 2019 - President Uhuru Kenyatta led Kenyans on Thursday in commemorating his late father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who died on August 22, 1978.

In his address, the President announced that this would be the last celebration to commemorate his father who died 41 years ago.

The President said this year’s celebration would mark the end of a tradition that has gone on for decades.

“There will be no more public memorial services for the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta,” Uhuru said

He said the family made the decision after thorough consultation with all family members including his mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

The Head of State also remembered his father as a man who gave his life to the service of this nation.

“We are not just here to remember the man; we are also here to remember what he stood for and what he gave his life for."

"Leadership is not about where you are from but a desire to serve and make a difference,” he said.
