Monday August 4, 2019-A report by Auditor General, Edward Ouko, has revealed filthy rot in Interior Ministry where procurement officers in Kenya Prisons Department purchased fake bullet proof vests worth billions of shillings.
Ouko also revealed that millions of taxpayers’ money were used to buy firewood to prisons that was never weighed.
In the case of fake bullet proof vests, the Prison Department purchased 600 vests without plates that offer protection against the bullets.
When questioned about the fake bullet proof vests, Corrections Services Principal Secretary, Zeinab Hussein, said the vests were delivered to the Department without being tested.
The National Assembly's Public Accounts Committee chairman, Opiyo Wandayi, said the matter should be investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and all those involved in the procurement of the vests should be arrested and jailed.
Wandayi also said that the figure to purchase the vests was exaggerated to siphon public money by few connected people within Government.
