Tuesday August 6, 2019 - Kakamega County MCAs have awarded themselves Sh45, 000 for house allowances.

In a motion they passed last week, the MCAs said the allowance should be backdated to October 2018 when the High Court ruled that all State officers are entitled to a house allowance.

The greedy Kakamega MCAs must have borrowed this destructive mindless idea from their counterparts in the National Assembly who awarded themselves Sh240,000 in house allowance.

Fortunately, the High Court blocked it.

Kakamega County has 60 MCAs and if each MCA awarded himself Sh 45,000, this translates to Sh 2.7 million shillings per month.

Residents of Kakamega County have asked detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to summon the MCAs for trying to steal public money “without consulting the electorate”.

Meanwhile, Kakamega County Governor, Wyclife Oparanya, sent his County staff home on Tuesday.

143 revenue officials were sent on a 60-day compulsory leave by the Governor.

The Governor also announced measures targeting to plug a Sh600 million shortfall in the County’s own revenue collection.
