Thursday August 8, 2019 - Former Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich, has hired a top lawyer to lead his defense team against accusations by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Noordin Haji, that he stole Sh 21 billion meant for the construction of phantom Arror and Kimwarer dams.
Rotich, who has since been sacked by President Uhuru Kenyatta, sought the services of former DPP, Philip Murgor, to defend him against accusations of graft.
On Thursday, Murgor was leading a battery of lawyers in defending Rotich who is accused of committing 12 crimes during the phony and supposed constriction of fake dams in Elgeyo Marakwet.
Murgor joined the likes of Senate Majority Leader, Kipchumba Murkomen, and Deputy President William Ruto's ICC lawyer, Katwa Kigen.
Murgor told the court that he had been briefed about the case on Wednesday and was struggling to catch up.
He complained that the prosecution had submitted evidence to the defence team in soft copy and insisted that they are handed the physical versions of the documents.
The prosecution, on its part, has lined up 140 witnesses in a bid to bring Rotich and other suspects to book, over the Kimwarer and Arror dams’ scandal.
Haji is banking on the expertise of Special Prosecutor, Taib Ali Taib, to nail the corrupt suspects.
