Friday August 30, 2019-Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Kipchumba Murkomen, has said the ongoing Mau Forest eviction is targeting members of the Kalenjin community.
Speaking on Friday, Murkomen, who is also the Majority leader in the Senate, blamed the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader, Raila Odinga, of being behind the inhuman evictions.
Murkomen, a close associate of Deputy President William Ruto, said that police are brutally mishandling the residents, burning their houses even before the official exercise.
“Polisi wanachapa watu hapa kama wanyama… Serikali ya Jubilee haiwezi Kubali mtoto yeyote hapigwe… 4000 children from seven schools are out of school…alafu mnakuja kusema ati kutafanyia siasa, wamama watoto wao wanakufa wakijifungua… mimi nimekosea kuja kulia na watu wangu.. wengine wanasema Murkomen anyang’anywe kiti ya majority leader,mi nimekosea wapi? Hii kitu ya Mau ndio ilileta Uhuru na Ruto pamoja. So nimeambiwa nisiende kuongea mambo ya Mau eti itaharibu handshake ya Raila na President,” Murkomen said.
Murkomen, who said that his position as majority leader is under threat because of his stand on the Mau issue, wants the Head of State to honour his campaign pledge and visit Mau residents to assure them of proper evictions.
Already the government has shut down 15 schools in the forest ahead of the evictions.
Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya said that the schools are not government institutions and have been set up in the area illegally.
