Thursday August 22, 2019 - A vocal Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Senator has welcomed the arrest of Keroche Breweries Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tabitha Karanja, and her husband, Joseph Karanja, for evading tax worth Sh 14.5 billion.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Noordin Haji, on Wednesday, Tabitha and Joseph have been using rogue Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) employees in evading tax that has now amounted to Sh 14.5 billion.

Haji said he is satisfied that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in public interest to charge the suspects with 10 counts of tax fraud contrary to the Tax Procedures Act of 2015.

But in her defence, Tabitha termed her arrest as "harassment and intimidation”.

According to the CEO, the only dispute Keroche Breweries has with KRA is on the applicable rate on Viena Ice ready to drink vodka which, she stated, is presently ongoing at the Tax Appeals Tribunal.

“It is not in good faith for the office of the DPP to purport to prosecute a matter that is still under determination undermining an institution obligated to handle such matters,” she said.

But Narok Senator, Ledama Ole Kina, said Tabitha’s arrest is welcome since she has been mistreating her employees like dogs.

Karma is a ....?  Please go to the labor court and see the number of cases against Keroche Breweries ... then you will understand why Karma is a BITCH,” Ole Kina who is an ODM senator said.
