Friday August 23, 2019 - Keroche Breweries Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tabitha Karanja, and her husband, Joseph Karanja, were released on Friday on bail after denying ten counts related to tax evasion amounting to Sh14.5 billion.
The couple, who are billionaires thanks to tax evasion, were released on Sh10 million and Sh2 million cash bail respectively after denying charges leveled against them by the State.
Alternatively, Joseph was asked to secure a bond of Sh5 million while his wife was given a bond of Sh15 million.
The husband was given favourable bail terms due to his medical condition that prompted police to release him on a personal bond while Tabitha spent the night in custody following their arrest on Thursday.
According to detectives, they are investigating former Kenya Revenue Authority Director General, John Njiraini, over the Keroche Breweries scandal.
A senior detective attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) noted that Tabitha has been colluding with Njiraini to evade tax worth billions.
“We must investigate him over the matter and we have many suspects who are willing to testify in the case,” said the DCI officer.
