Thursday August 8, 2019 – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Noordin Haji, has ordered the immediate arrest of African Spirits Ltd Director, Humphrey Kariuki, and 8 others for evading tax worth Sh 41 billion.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Haji ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to arrest Kariuki, Stuart Gerald, Peter Njenga Kuria, Robert Thinji Muriithi, Geoffrey Kasaria , Sethu Pabbra, Eric Mulwa Nzobu, Simon and Kepha Githu Gakure.

He also ordered African Spirits Limited and Wow Beverages to be put on the police’s radar until the case is determined.

Haji further said that Africa Spirits has been smuggling ethanol of questionable quality which has been used to produce some of its popular vodka, gin, and whisky brands which the DCI said is unfit for human consumption.

Kariuki, 62, is the founder of Janus Continental Group, a conglomerate that includes The Hub - a premier shopping mall in Nairobi; Africa Spirits, a leading manufacturer of Alcoholic beverages; Dalbit Petroleum, one of the largest oil distributors in East and Southern Africa, and Great Lakes Africa Energy, a U.K-based company that is a developer and operator of power projects in Southern Africa.

He is also the owner of the 5-star Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club and the neighboring Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and Animal Orphanage.
