Thursday July 25, 2019-Elgeyo Marakwet county residents have turned down calls by local politicians to demonstrate.
On Monday following the arrest of Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich and senior Kerio Valley Devilment Authority (KVDA), local politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto had told residentS to come out and demonstrate against “persecutions of their sons and daughters”
Rotich and 28 others were arrested over Sh 63 billion scandal during the construction of Arror and Kimwarer dams in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
However, the residents said they will not protest over the arrest of KVDA officials implicated in the dams’ scandal.
Led by John Ayabei, they claimed that graft is long overdue and everyone should carry his own cross.
“There has been pressure by local politicians for us to hold demonstrations to protest against the government for targeting one community in the purge. But we have rejected their overtures,” Ayabei claimed.
The residents also asked the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to speed up the case for justice to be served.
“We have rejected calls by supporters of the suspects implicated in the dams project scam to hold demonstrations against their arrest. In fact we urge the court to speed up the hearing and determination of the matter so that we can get justice,” Ayabei stated.
