Safaricom interim CEO MICHAEL JOSEPH opens up on his battle with cancer after BOB COLLYMORE’s demise

Tuesday, July 02, 2019 - Days after Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore, succumbed to cancer, his predecessor and current interim Safaricom boss, Michael Joseph, has revealed that he once battled the deadly disease during his first stint at the helm of the telecommunications giant.

Speaking to a local daily, the South African revealed that he was diagnosed with colon cancer and at some point, ran Safaricom from his hospital bed.

“It was a long drawn out affair and for some time, I ran Safaricom from a hospital bed.

“People would bring me advertisements to approve and all that and then they would be worried because I had tubes running all over my body,” he said.

While he beat the cancer, he says he’s not sure whether the cancer is 100 per cent gone.

“My doctor says the only way you can know if you are totally cancer-free is if you are dead,” he said.

Joseph arrived in Kenya in 2000 with five Vodafone employees to start Safaricom which was housed in an apartment at Norfolk towers.

Under his stewardship, Safaricom grew into a multibillion company before handing it over to Collymore who took it a notch higher until his demise.
