Monday July 15, 2019-Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, has for the first time spoken about the MPs salary increment.
Over 349 MPs are currently up in arms with the Salary and Remuneration Commission demanding for a Salary increment of up to Sh.2.9 Million.
In a recently leaked memo, signed by Parliamentary Service Commission chairman, Justin Muturi, the MPs want a basic salary of Sh. 1, 156,108 from the current Sh 532, 500 arguing that the MP runs the same level as that of the Judge of Appeal while the two speakers of the Parliament rank at the same level as the Deputy President of Kenya and the Chief Justice.
Now speaking on Sunday, Sonko said Leader of Majority in Parliament, Aden Duale is behind clamour for MPs payrise.
Sonko said Duale should be ashamed that he is asking for more salary yet his constituents are dying from hunger and malnutrition.
“Duale, you are my friend. However, you are fighting for salary increment yet Garissa residents are suffering. They do not have water, the roads are poor too. If you continue with such an inhuman soul, in 2022 you will herd your camels without wearing an underwear!,” Sonko said.
“Instead of increasing your salary, release those funds to assist us in implementing devolution. We are even calling upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to resolve that issue,” Sonko added.
