Tuesday, July 16, 2019- Interior CS, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, has continued his onslaught on gambling after signing deportation orders against 17 foreigners who are directors of betting firms.

The Betting Control and Licensing Board(BCLB) has so far suspended licenses of 27 betting firms that are not tax compliant- including SportPesa and Betin, which control 85% of the multi-billion-shilling industry.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Kenya has directed all banks to halt services for all the blacklisted betting firms days after telecommunication companies were ordered to suspend paybills customers use to make deposits.

In a statement to banks yesterday, the Central Bank of Kenya notified them of BCLB’s failure to renew their permit for the July 1, 2019, to July 1, 2020, period.

“This is to bring to your attention that the BCLB has not renewed the operating licences of certain bookmakers and lottery operators for the period July 1, 2019, to July 1, 2020. Please find attached, the list of entities whose licences have not been renewed for your information,” read the statement from CBK.

Matiang’i has vowed to rein in on betting claiming that he has the green light from the highest office in the country.

“The presidency has given us the green light to deal with the industry of gambling that is now turning into rogue outfits”

“Our decision is going to shake the sector for sure, but we have to save our country” Matiang’i said.
