Monday June 17, 2019 - After yesterday’s outburst against Deputy President William Ruto and his tanga tanga movement, it is now clear that President Uhuru Kenyatta may never support Ruto for President come 2022.
Uhuru is also still sceptical about supporting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as his successor when his term comes to end.
This was evident on Friday last week after ODM leaders, among them National Assembly Minority Leader, John Mbadi, and Siaya Senator James Orengo put pressure on the President to endorse Raila for the 2022 Presidency but he never did as he completely steered clear of the matter.
But there are indications that Uhuru may endorse Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as his surprise candidate in the next elections.
Ever since his elevation as the Super CS, Matiang’i’s influence in the Kisii region and the two Counties at large has grown in leaps and bounds.
Matiang’i has represented Uhuru in many functions - a clear indication that he is grooming him for something big.
Already, the Abagusii Council of Elders has urged Matiang’i to declare interest in the presidency noting that the President trusts him and would support him if he goes for the top seat.
“As a council, we are urging him (Matiang’i) to go for the highest seat in the country. Unfortunately, he has personally not declared interest, but should count on our support if he does,” said James Matandura, the council's chairman.
