How Kenyans are celebrating for getting ‘free’ data bundles from Safaricom after a suspected glitch

Friday, June 28, 2019 - A section of Safaricom customers are celebrating after a glitch in the giant Telco’s systems saw subscribers access expensive data bundles free of charge.

Shrewd customers gained access to Safaricom’s platinum offer by dialing *544# and selecting option 6.

The option offered the customer a premium plan that costs a minimum of Sh2, 000 and tops at Sh10, 000 by paying for it through Bonga points.

The Bonga points option is where the ‘bug’ is suspected to have occurred and has since been disabled.

From as low as just one bonga point, a customer could buy the Sh10,000 package which offers 100 international call minutes, 1,500 minutes and 40gb of data

Whilst the company has not communicated expressly on the issue, some customers are worried they might be forced to pay for the illegally obtained data.
