How I stopped gambling and turned my life around as a University student

I'm sure my story has been told through someone else's eyes a thousand times before, but mine is unique to me. My road to destruction all started back in October of 2017 when I started gambling.

My name is James Okoth and am a proud Manchester United fan of close to 10 good years. I remember when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm of the club delivering wins day-in, day-out, man, what a time to be a fan! We were just unbeatable - the best team in the world.

Back then there wasn't many places one could place a bet on a winning team like my Manchester United but in came betting websites that I felt were a godsend to a jobless student like I. Finally, a way I could make some extra cash utilizing my vast football knowledge and love for the game.

My Lucky streak

The month of February 2017 is when I got my first taste of victory from betting and oh boy! It felt really good. I felt like I had cheated the system by winning easy money from a big betting company in East Africa. I remember it like yesterday. I won Kshs. 60,000 from a multibet th for selected football teams in the English Premier League.

If you have ever placed a bet, you would know the thrill of winning a multibet with 8 separate results- all correct. I was even happier that I had bet Arsenal would lose and it did. Glorious times.

My temptation Esther

As a struggling student, I had now found a way to buy new shoes, pay for cafeteria meals in full, turn up at the club like a baller and more importantly, have confidence to ask Esther out on a Pizza date. Esther was very beautiful and did not talk to broke guys.

This time, I was not broke because that Kshs. 60,000 made me instantly more handsome to her and her ratchet friend Tina. We met for Pizza and she asked if her friend could come too, my answer was 'but of course'! Not knowing she ate like she had four mouths, and a thirst that's unquenchable. Long story short, they 'ate' all my money and I ended up not even getting some. Damn, I felt played but I was determined to score just my Manchester United.

Over the next few months, I got back to my betting ways and it was good going I tell you. I started making riskier bets, and my betting account fluctuated between 40-60k every weekend. I was starting to miss class because I was so comfortable with my financial situation. My mind was totally consumed with 'kuekelea' and how soon I could score, not only with Esther, but other girls who were totally out of my league. My winning streak was unbelievable and I felt like I could almost make a living at this.

I remember once listening to Kenny Rogers' signature song from 1978 ~ The Gambler

"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away and know when to run"

But I was no quitter because "quitters never win and winners never quit" like my dad always told me back in our Rongo village in Kisumu.

My downfall

Sometime back in September of the same year, my now princess, Esther told me that we should visit Mombasa after the semester ended and I was overjoyed at the thought of having her all to myself for 1 whole week. This meant I had to make more money and I had to bet big to get that final big money like I always told myself.

It was on the 7th of October when I lost my first big bet. I put all my winnings, close to Kshs. 120,000 on a multibet with 10 teams. I was going to win more than Kshs. 1,500,000,000 (one million, five hundred thousand). Very nice.

I don't know what happened that week of the games but I suspected poor refereeing because I lost only one game because of a penalty! I was totally humiliated, surprised and angry all at once and I went into hiding to avoid spending and many questions from my classmates about which teams would win because I was the bet master with all the winning tips. Esther on the other hand, had met a guy with a nice car and I was back to being 'that guy who keeps calling me' to her.

I was determined to show that guy who had taken my love away that I was them man by winning her back so I doubled down. With the money my dad sent me to pay the last semesters fees, I put into my betting account and prayed for the best. I knew I had to win this time so I went online and searched for the best betting tips but found something even better, more interesting.

My redemption

I read about this natural Healer online - a Dr. Mugwenu, who guaranteed winning in Casinos and betting sites. At first, I didn't believe it but I needed all the help I could get so that I didn't lose my fees and my girl to a working class boy with a car. I sent a private message on his Facebook DM and amazingly, he responded with instructions on what I needed to do. I thought it was a hoax so I called him and told him all about my Esther and my love for Manchester United.

He did not give me betting tips but advised me to stop gambling. Quite unusual. I told him that I needed to win big for things to be back to normal and he understood. He told me not to disclose what he shared with me to anyone and gave me information on how to avoid losing this time.

My happiness & future

As I narrate this story, I have successfully quit gambling for good thanks to him and I am still in school about to graduate in the next 2 semesters. Esther is my side dish as I now date the right girl - Tina who isn't whom I thought she was.

Thanks to Dr. Mugwenu, I scored in life like my team Manchester United. Try it for yourself.
