Tuesday, June 04, 2019- Kenneth Macharia, a gay Kenyan rugby player based in the UK is facing deportation after his application for asylum was rejected.

The 39-year old , who plays for Bristol Bisons, a gay and inclusive rugby club, applied for asylum in 2016 saying that he had a well-founded fear of persecution in Kenya because of his homosexuality which is illegal in the country.

His plight prompted more than 100,000 people to sign a petition calling on the Home Office to halt his removal.

However, he has been told he must now leave the country “without delay”.

“You have no basis to continue to stay in the United Kingdom and you are expected to make arrangements to leave the United Kingdom without delay,” read the letter in part.

Speaking after the verdict, Macharia said: “I am feeling hopeless at the moment.

Macharia’s mother, Jacinta, who is a British citizen had pleaded with the Home Office not to deport her son saying that she depends on him to move around due to her arthritis.

“He is the only child I have in this country and has been driving me to and from work in various places because of my arthritis, for which I have been attending physiotherapy sessions,” Jacinta said.

She added: “I am a 69-year-old British citizen and will progressively depend on him, for support as I grow older.”
