Friday May 17, 2019-Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is in deep financial crisis and is unable to run some of its operations including scheduled grassroots elections.
This was revealed by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, who doubles as the director of elections.
Junet admitted at a public event in Migori County the Orange party was broke and needed to be bailed out to get back to the right track.
He blamed the financial woes facing ODM on failure by the Government of President Uhuru Kenyatta to remit the political parties' funds on time.
“According to the law, political parties have a right to get a share of the national budget. Therefore the government has no right to deny parties that deserve the share of the budget,” he said in Nyatike.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, who revealed that the Treasury owes ODM a total of KSh 5 billion which have accumulated since 2013/2014 financial year.
“What we want is to have all our monies disbursed in totality. All our operations have stalled due to lack of finances. We are currently owed KSh5 billion by the government since 2013. We need the cash to carry out civic education and run our affairs,'' Sifuna stated.
