Thursday May 2, 2019-Nairobi gubernatorial loser, Jimnah Mbaru, has said merit should be the guiding principle in the hiring of Safaricom's next Chief Executive Officer.

Safaricom is planning to replace ailing CEO, Boby Collymore who is set to retire in August due to bad health.

There are rumours that the government is interfering with the hiring of the CEO with Information and Communication Cabinet Secretary, Joe Mucheru pushing for the hiring of a Kenyan as a CEO.

But, Mbaru who is an investment banker said the giant telecommunications firm should not bow to pressure and compromise in staffing of its top leadership.

"Safaricom should appoint the best person to be its Chief Executive Officer irrespective of whether he is a Kenyan or not. Meritocracy should be the guiding principle. United Kingdom has a Central Bank Governor from Canada. Israel had an American as Governor of its Central Bank,"Mbaru tweeted on Thursday.
