No-nonsense MATIANG'I announces new tough regulations for betting companies in Kenya-Many will close shop(LOOK)

Thursday, May 02, 2019- The Kenya Betting and Licensing Board has tightened the screw on betting firms in the country with a raft of new tough regulations.

In a statement sent to media houses on Thursday, the board has banned celebrities from endorsing betting firms and outlawed outdoor advertising of gambling, advertising of gambling on all social media platforms and gambling adverts on TV between 6am and 10pm.

On top of that, any form of advertisement of gambling must be approved by the board.

"It has been further been decided that any form of advertisement of gambling must be approved by the board and such an advertisement must contain a warning message about the consequences of gambling including its addictiveness, and that the warning message must constitute a third of the actual advertisement and be of the same font," remarked acting board chair Lily Wambua.

Consequently, all betting firms have been given until May 30 this year to comply.

This comes barely a month after Interior CS Fred Matiang'i warned that all betting companies that have not fulfilled their tax obligation by July 1 will lose their licenses.
