Friday, May 03, 2019-  Controversial businessman Jimi Wanjigi is smiling all the way to the bank after court ordered Nation Media Group to pay him a cool Sh8 million over a fake obituary that appeared on their Nation Newspaper in 2017 claiming Wanjigi was dead.

Wanjigi had sued the media house seeking compensation for breach of security and mental torture arising from the fake obituary.

While the tycoon had  sought Sh100 million in compensation, saying the paper not only published details of his residence, but denied him the right to dignity by treating him as a dead person while he was still alive, the court has awarded him Sh8 million.

In their defense, NMG claimed the photo was placed by a third party and carried the name of a different person – James Richard Wanjagi.

In her ruling, Justice Wilfrida Okwany stated that NMG couldn’t place blame on a third party for placing the obituary, since the paper had enjoyed profit from the sale of the day’s copy.
