Big blow to greedy MPs as SRC moves to court to recover Sh 2.25 million they paid themselves irregularly – UHURU is not happy

Friday May 17,2019-Salaries and Remuneration Commission ( SRC) chairperson, Lyn Mengich, has said her commission will move to court to challenge MPs Sh 250,000 monthly house allowance, setting a stage  for a fierce legal showdown with Parliament.

Last month, Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) paid Sh 2.25 million to each of the 416 lawmakers over and above their monthly pay for April. The money arose from their backdated benefits for the contentious house allowance.

This means poor Kenyans taxpayers will cough up with Sh 1.25 billion annually to meet the lawmaker’s house allowance despite enjoying a subsidized mortgage of Sh 20 million each.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mengich said payments without SRC approval was illegal and unconstitutional and that is the reason her commission will go to court to seek refund of the money.

“Such payments have far –reaching ramifications on the fiscal suitability of the public wage bill and go against principals of fairness and equity,” Mengich said.

She said the MPs benefits, including the house allowance, was included in their gross pay.

MPs currently get Sh 710,000 in gross pay and this is enough to cater their expenses unless they were elected to loot from public coffers.
