Thursday April 25, 2019-Defense Cabinet Secretary, Raychelle Omamo, has revealed the name of the most powerful soldier who ever joined Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) since its formation in 1963.
According to Omamo, former Chief of Defence Forces, Julius Karangi was the most powerful KDF soldier Kenya has ever had.
Apart from his duties in the military, Karangi had influence in both President Uhuru Kenyatta's government as well as Mwai Kibaki's.
It is reported that he advised both presidents on key appointments even in the Cabinet.
“General Karangi is probably the most extraordinary man I have ever met," commented Omamo during Karangi's handover ceremony.
He will be remembered as the army general who led Kenyan troops to war for the first time in Kenya's history in October 2011.
After his retirement, he was appointed to Chair the National Social Security Fund board of trustees.
Karangi joined the Kenya Air Force in 1973. He went on to train as a cadet in the prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy in the UK, whereby he was commissioned as an officer in 1974. After getting qualified as a flight navigator in October 1975, he was posted to the Flying Wing Kenya Air Force as a navigator.
He rose through the ranks and became Chief of Defence Forces in 2014.
