MOSES KURIA attacks Kalenjins for blackmailing the government over maize prices – Kitaeleweka 2022

Thursday November 29, 2018-Gatundu South MP, Moses Kuria, has attacked some Rift Valley leaders for trying to blackmail the government over maize prices.

Last week, the government said it will buy a bag of maize at Sh 2300 a price but leaders led by Cherangany MP, Joshua Kutuny rejected the price.

Now appearing on Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) on Wednesday evening, Kuria claimed the like of Kutuny are blackmailing the government to buy their crop at Sh 3600.

Kuria said that the government was not contractually obligated to buy the cereals from them.

“When did we agree that someone goes to his farm and plants maize with the sole intention to sell to the government? Did the government write you a letter to plant maize? So that you say now [sic] the government is breaching a contract?” Kuria said.

The controversial lawmaker also explained that the farmers invested in agriculture in their own volition so they should not dictate the price at which the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) should offer them.

He also attacked the cereal producers by claiming that maize from Uganda was so much cheaper compared to the local production, yet they receive subsidies from the government while Ugandan farmers do not.
