Wednesday, October 17, 2018- President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged government officials to use underhand methods to make sure fish from China doesn’t enter Kenyan market.
In January this year, Industrialisation and Enterprise Development CS Adan Mohamed defended fish imports from China, claiming the country does not produce enough to meet demand.
However, speaking on Tuesday during the Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) Roundtable at Strathmore University, Uhuru insisted that there was need to protect Kenyan fishermen who have incurred heavy losses due to increase of imported fish from China.
The President urged the relevant government agencies to ‘think outside the box’ and block fish from china from entering Kenyan market so that local fishermen can earn a better living.
Uhuru said: “Jameni, tutatoa samaki kutoka China..hata kama Finance Bill imepita, think out of the box, tunaweza kusema hiyo samaki amabayo imefiaka ni mbaya na unaifungia.”
“Kuna njia nyingi serekali inaweza kufanya kazi.”
“Ndio tuhakikishe watu wetu wamefaidika jameni.”
